Common questions

Do I need final expense insurance?

A funeral in Canada usually costs $8,000 to $15,000. That includes the service, burial or cremation, and related costs. Without coverage, your family pays that bill — often at the hardest moment of their lives. A final expense plan pays those costs for them, so money is one thing they will not have to worry about.

How does it work?

You pay a fixed amount each month, and your rate never goes up. When you pass away, the person you choose (your beneficiary) receives one tax-free payment — usually within days of the claim. They can use the money however they need: the funeral, unpaid bills, or everyday costs while they grieve.

Why is there no medical exam?

These plans were designed to skip the medical exam and blood test. Most ask a few simple health questions instead. Some plans accept you based only on your age and where you live — no health questions at all. That is why Canadians with health conditions, or who were declined before, can still qualify.

Who is the insurance company?

The insurer is Canadian Premier Life Insurance Company, which operates in Canada as Securian Canada. It is regulated by the federal government (OSFI) and licensed in each province where coverage is sold. Your policy is a contract with a real Canadian insurance company — not a membership plan or third-party benefit program.

What does it cost?

As a guide: non-smokers in their 50s typically pay about $30–$50 per month for $25,000 of coverage. Your exact rate depends on your age, gender, province, smoking status, and the amount you choose. A licensed advisor will confirm your rate after you submit the form. There is no obligation to buy.

  1. Living Benefits: Select plans include an accelerated death benefit rider that allows the policyholder to access a portion of the death benefit while living if diagnosed with a qualifying terminal illness. Availability and terms vary by product and province. Speak with a licensed advisor for details.
  2. No Medical Exam: Simplified-issue and guaranteed-acceptance products do not require a medical examination or blood test. Eligibility for simplified-issue products is subject to health questions at the time of application. Guaranteed-acceptance products are available to all eligible Canadian residents within the specified age band, subject to a graded benefit period in the first 24 months of coverage — meaning if death occurs in year one or two, the payout is limited (typically a return of premiums paid, not the full benefit amount). A licensed advisor can explain the exact terms.
